Emerald Ash Borer Update Oct. 2014

The latest update as of early September 2014, the insect has only been found in Boulder. Upon detection the prior fall, much information has been released with both correct and incorrect facts. As more people have been surveying the city of Boulder, they are finding more infected trees throughout. Some of the evaluated trees appear to have been affected for 3-4 years +. This is the part that alarms us. When a tree starts showing signs of decline from EAB, it’s been attacked for a number of years. In this timeframe, the beetle has continued to advance. The delayed response of a tree declining to EAB, and the advancement of the insect will create tough conditions for containment. The beetle is here to stay. The speed of the spread is the topic of much discussion. There are controls for this insect! Available treatments are either a soil treatment annually, or a direct bark injection done every other year.
